In the state of California, vehicles are required to submit to Smog Checks as a part of the vehicle's registration process, with some exceptions. The STAR Program, implemented by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair, ensures that stations performing smog inspections and repairs qualify by meeting the highest standards of excellence. How Often do I Need a Smog Check?

A STAR Certified Smog Check is required by the State of California with the renewel of your registration in some counties. Not all counties require a smog check with registration. When it is time for your vehicle’s Smog Check, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will issue a registration renewal notice, which will also indicate if a Smog Check will be required. A Smog Check will also be required if:

• A vehicle’s ownership is being changed
• A vehicle is registered for the first time in the State of California

Vehicles with excess emissions must be properly repaired by a STAR Certified Smog Check facility.
